Can the iPad Change Gaming?

Everyone loves debating whether the iPhone and iPod Touch can be considered true gaming platforms.  On one side of the argument, why shouldn’t they be?  Not only do the top-tier titles like The Sims 3, Peggle, Assassins Creed, Rock Band, and Madden 10 run nicely, but they also have many groundbreaking original games including the now famous Tap Tap Revenge and Pocket God.  On the other hand though, it doesn’t have buttons.  The touch only controls can be extremely clunky with some games and some gamers argue that if it doesn’t have buttons or any type of control besides tapping and sliding, can it possibly be considered a gaming console?

Can the same thing, only 5 times the size possibly be the newest big thing in gaming?

If you put it in the way I just did.  It sounds stupid.  But I guess this new iPad thing is a bit more than an oversized iPod Touch.  Not only can you watch movies on a much bigger screen and high-definition You Tube videos, but it’s now getting a dedicated Book section of the iTunes store where you can buy books to read on the device.  This puts the iPad in direct competition with the Kindle from Amazon.

But wait.  This isn’t Another Watcher or Another Reader, this is Another GAMER.  Did they happen to mention anything about games on the thing?

Well, they showed a few games on it.  And though they still have the clunky touch controls, the graphics look pretty cool on a big screen.  And, every single app ever made for the iPhone, including the games, will be available for you to transfer or purchase for the device when it comes out.

But so far, theres been no response from any of the major publishers if they’d make dedicated games for it.  And really, thats the only way the iPad as a gaming device will ever get off the ground.  If we soon has big name publishers and developers like EA, Activision, or even Pop Cap announcing that they will develope games exclusively for the device, or even if they say they’ll work hard on their multi-platforms titles, we could have the next DS or PSP.  Only hard work can get fix bad touch controls, improve graphics, and truly deliver a gaming experience without buttons.

But can Apple and our favorite gaming companies take up that challenge?  That is the question.

Will enough people buy the iPad for it to be a new force in the gaming world, or is it simply just another device for Apple freaks and gadget geeks.  (I am really really proud of that rhyme)
